DENR Geohazard Maps of the Philippines

Reports of disastrous landslides and detrimental flashfloods has led the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to create the geohazard maps of the Philippines.

However, even after the release of the geohazard map, the casualties and damages caused by landslides and floods continues to pile up.

The geohazard maps must be used to inform the residents of landslide-prone and flood-prone areas that they are in a gloomy situation in times when the Philippines is faced with ruthless typhoons, and not to be used as story telling tools after the gruesome incidents have already happened.

Geohazard Maps of the Philippines

The geohazard maps are the topographic section of the areas of the Philippines with color-coded natural hazards, like landslides, floods and flash floods.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau have employed their team to physically scan the terrains and land forms all over the Philippines to come up with this very helpful map.

The maps can be found in the official website of the MGB at www.mgb.gov.ph. However, the maps currently posted on the website of MGB are in low resolution. There has been offers from other websites to store the geohazard maps in high resolution.

The maps have a scale of 1:50,000 (1 cm on the map corresponds to 500 meters on the ground). The MGB is doing a remapping to magnify it more, to a scale of 1 to 10,000 (1 cm to 100 meters on the ground)

With the geohazard maps, users will be informed of which areas in their provinces and municipalities are risky and to which areas they must relocate.

Government officials must make commitments of relocating their constituents away from the hazardous areas.

The weather bureau can also include in their reports which landslide-susceptible areas will be affected by heavy rains.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau can only give recommendations through the geohazard maps. The users will be the one to have to take actions.
